Ed Sheeran look-alike forced to go ‘in disguise’ to escape fans

One Manchester man is in love with the shape of his face.

Ty Jones grew up believing he’d never accomplish his dreams of becoming an entertainer — until he realized his likeness to English singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran. Now the Manchester, UK, native works as a full-time lookalike and aspiring actor, but looking so similar to the celebrity musician has also come with some drawbacks: namely, how obsessed Sheeran’s fan base is with him. And, as a dead ringer for Sheeran, Jones often has to deal with the dogged fan base obsessing over him.

“I’ve had crazy numbers of fans follow me in Hackney in London and in Los Angeles, to the point where the team I was working with have had to help me make a dramatic escape plan,” Jones told Jam Press. His experiences with devoted Sheeran groupies have ranged from “fans crying and shaking to a starstruck cyclist who couldn’t stop looking and they crashed their bike while still making eye contact.” The latter experience, he added, “was like a comedy sketch, when I went over to help, they said, ‘No way have I just met Ed Sheeran.’”

Indeed, while Jones credits sharing similar facial features, hair color and being the same height as the star with saving him from his formerly “quite low” aspirations of making ends meet by working on a fishing boat or at a retail chain, it has also been a curse in some ways.

The sheer level of attention he gets from people who think he’s Sheeran has forced Jones to adapt a celebrity-level incognito in his daily life, keeping “a low profile” and going “in disguise” in sunglasses, a hat and a face mask to perform basic errands, as well as food shopping at night.

In addition to the “daily” recognition of being like Ed, other perks of sharing the crooner’s looks include being sent “free stuff” from brands and fans and being let into clubs and restaurants as a VIP.

And Sheeran himself is aware of his doppeläanger: The pair met in 2011 and are due to meet again, over Zoom, later this month.

Now, Jones is attempting to lean even further into his lucky glitch of nature. “I aspire to master his songs and become a tribute act,” he said, “and also keep trying my hand at acting or different roles in the future.”
