Solving today’s Wordle may not be as life changing as winning Friday’s $1.28 billion Megamillions lottery jackpot, but it is a satisfying victory nonetheless and Newsweek is here to help you achieve it.
It may sound simple enough to have six attempts to get a five-letter word, but with so many possible options it is not hard to find yourself tied up in knots.
A good tactic is to start with a word rich in vowels, like AUDIO, and leave the lesser used letters, like X, Q and Z until you have a better idea of what the word might be.
If you get a wrong letter, the tile turns gray but a correct letter in the right place, the tile turns green. A correct letter that is in the wrong place turns the tile yellow.
At the end of the game, a box pops up showing your track record, which you can share for bragging rights, or keep to yourself if you did not get it this time.
Engineer Josh Wardle started working on the game in 2013 and finished it during the COVID lockdown. After getting help from his partner, Palak Shah, the game was launched at the end of last year.
With a title punning on Wardle’s name, Wordle quickly took off and within a few months it went from being played by a few dozen people to being the daily quiz fix for tens of millions. It achieved a truly global reach when it was bought by The New York Times for an undisclosed seven-figure sum.
The graphic below provided by Statista shows how the game took off in popularity within a short time.
